Guacamole dates all the way back to the 16th century Aztecs of southern Mexico. Literally translated to “avocado sauce”, guacamole typically consists of a lightly seasoned base of mashed avocados with a wide variety of garnishes including tomato, onion, garlic, cilantro, lime and chiles. The dish became popular in the American Southwest in the 1960’s and quickly spread to the rest of the United States becoming one of the most familiar staples of any Mexican meal.
